5.3 > 6.2?

I’ve been casually looking at the new Sierra AT4 trucks. I like the AT4 package and overall seems like a very nice truck. AT4 strikes a balance between Raptor level performance and RAM level luxury.

AT4 can be had with 3 different engines - 5.3 or 6.2 V8, and the new 3.0 diesel inline 6. The 6.2 and diesel cost the same ($2500). The 5.3 uses the standard 8-speed trans where the 6.2 and diesel get the newer 10-speed.

Looking at the gas V8s, strangely, the 420HP 6.2 is not rated for any more towing or payload capacity. The extra power seems to be there just for performance. But considering this thing is a truck, not a sports car, does the 6.2 really make sense? Yes, the 6.2 scoots and it has a great sound, especially with the optional performance exhaust. The 6.2 also burns more gas and wants premium fuel. The 5.3 is more than adequate power , tows the same, gets better mileage and uses regular unleaded and doesn’t cost $2500 extra. Is the 6.2 power, sound, and 10-speed trans worth it?

Maybe the answer is to wait for the new diesel to come out!

I drive a 5.3 Silverado for work and it has never left me wanting more power.

I’ve been researching the GM LS motors for a swap into my K5 for a couple of years now.  I think the 5.3 is a better motor.  My pal who is a GM mechanic agrees.  You might see a little more seat of the pants grunt from the bigger displacement, but that 5.3 is what’s going in the K5 this winter...

Ram Rebel with a Hemi? Easy solution.

Joking aside (sorry I love the Ram), the 5.3 should be plenty adequate. I do think the 10 speed is a better transmission and is a little less dimwitted than the 8, but probably not worth the additional cost. Drive both and see what you prefer.

One thing to watch out for is the displacement on demand. I have a mechanic neighbor who says that’s his bread & butter, replacing 5.3s that have failed due to this system, says he does several per month. Since it’s a swap project it may be worth looking into a delete kit - I don’t think it’s going to save you that much fuel in a K5 anyways, I think those are somehow less aerodynamic than a brick.

I have a 6.2 Sierra with the 8 speed , I have driven a couple of 5.3's, but no for any huge amount of time so I can’t really compare them.

However, I love the 6.2 in my truck, it is pretty silly how well it accelerates. It de finitely has a lineman doing a 4.6 40 yard dash feel to it.

As far gas mileage, I average around 15-16 but my commute is almost all 45 MPH roads with stop lights, a l ot of accelerate, stop, accelerate stuff.

On the highway doing 80ish I get around 21 mpg.

I am sure the 10 speed does even better ga s mileage wise, maybe test drive both engines back to back and see if they feel different enough to justify the price.

They have been making some version of the 327 for 60 years or more I think the bugs are worked out by now. I would get the 327 just for cost savings and fuel economy.

You can’t really go wrong with any of the modern domestic pickups. They’re all great, but expensive. Make sure you check the axle ratio on the exact one you’re looking to buy though, as the fuel-economy-special gears make for a crappy driving experience.

If you’re planning on towing anything sizable, just get a 3/4 ton with the big diesel. There’s enough price overlap in options that you can get a relatively nice one for around the same price as a loaded up gas 1/2 ton. (this is the route I took on my current truck).

Trying to park it anywhere will be the biggest problem.

They are all like this now, but no more ground clearance than a 1970’s truck.

Honest question, if the interior isn’t as nice as a Ram, whats the point of getting a GMC?

5.3 all the way. The 10 speed would be more of a selling point over the 6.2, but not sure how reliability has been on it yet. The 5.3 makes 355hp and 385ftlbs, not sure where you would ever need or really be able to use more than that in a half ton.

I’d get the more expensive engines; just for the transmission; probably the Diesel

Yeah, the DOD delete is part of the plan, a square-body Chevy on 35's is actually 11% LESS aerodynamic than a cinderblock, so fuel efficiency isn’t high on the list of benefits of an LS swap, lol! Although.... The lighter motor, the stripped interior, WRX seats, backseat delete, truck tailgate swap, doors removed and top ditched might save me close to 400 pounds so maybe I’ll get something resembling fuel savings at some point. But then at some point, a cage, tube bumpers and a winch, full-size spare, on-board air,... nevermind. She’s gonna remain a sub- 10 mpg rig, I guess...

From what I understand the 5.3 will come with the 10 speed in certain configurations for 2020. Given that I think the 5.3 is indeed the way to go for the AT4 just for the fact that if you don’t see much reward beyond the performance the 6.2 might not be for you. However if your normal driving skews heavily to highway I think the diesel is worth a look.

Fair point, I like the way the GMC looks a little better and I like the AT4 package with factory lift. I also get a deal on GM products so tend to look there first. Nothing wrong with a RAM though - I might look at one.

That’s kind of what I’m thinking. Also, I think for 2020 the 5.3 now comes with the 10-speed so that might be the best combo. Or the new inline 6 diesel...

Yeah, I’ve had a couple 2500s and also a SRW 4-door long bed 3500 Dmax . Talk about hard to park - that thing required a wide berth. I’m not towing anything significant now so a 1500 is plenty. I agree prices are nuts though. A loaded 6.2 AT4 is $60k, although I think a 5.3 might be closer to $50k after discounts and deals.

I came to ask this as well, If you like the AT4 package, the Rebel trim of the Ram does all of that plus the better interior. IMO of course

5.3 is plenty for light duty towing. The 8-speed is also plenty strong.

Save the money and the gas.

One guy’s opinion who’s owned both...

I dunno about the current-get but my stepdad has the previous generation with the High Country trim which has the 10 speed and the 6.2 and it puts out some pretty impressive MPG numbers for a larger engine with that 10 speed like mid-20's on the highway impressive
